The Rise of the Bernice MacNaughton Clans

We’ve all heard the names, heard the stories and heard the bagpipes, but amidst all the new gossip and myths concerning the clans, many students admit to still being confused about this new concept. It seems Highlanders still want an answer to the ever-pertinent question: What, exactly, are the Clans about?

The concept of the Bernice MacNaughton Clans is similar to those often seen in boarding schools, which divide their students into houses (clans), which allow students to distinguish themselves and to have pride in their clan and school. The clans Stewart, MacDonald, MacLeod and Campbell are cross-dividing MacNaughton’s social groups into four diverse sects that work together to achieve a common goal: increasing student involvement and school spirit within the Highlander community. The idea of the clans is for students to be able to identify themselves with a group, especially the grade nines, who still may not feel at home here at BMHS.

“The goal this year is to have 100% of students participating in at least one school activity, and have 100% of students participate in at least one volunteer service,” says Mr. Trider, organizer of the clans.

Right now, the Clan Leaders are working together to create a points incentive for a bit of inter-school competition between the four clans. Winning and participating in certain events and activities can earn each clan points throughout the year, until June, when the winning clan will be announced.

This Friday, the first clan activity, The Terry Fox Run, will go underway at Bernice MacNaughton. With three different options for participation, including a three-legged race, a sprint, and the classic “Terry Fox Walk” around the school, everyone has the opportunity to get involved. Be sure to sign up and pay your two dollars in the foyer sometime this week, and come prepared to win points for your clan!

The clans are also organizing a Value-Book fundraiser which takes off this Monday, September 24th. A leader from each clan will distribute coupon books for students to sell for $20.00 in order to win points for their clan. If a student sells one, they will receive a free clan t-shirt, and with each additional sale they will gain points their clan. At the termination of the fundraiser, the clan who sells the most books will get to watch Braveheart on the big screen in the auditorium, and if the total sales reach beyond 900 books, the school administration (Mr. Wilson, Mr. Lawrence and Ms.Roper) will all wear kilts at the end-of-year graduation in June!

Stay tuned for details about “Spirit Week” and other upcoming Clan Activities
