Highlander News
Highlander News

Greetings! The school year is quickly winding down and we have just started our fourth and final school term for 2008-2009. I have enclosed some important information, news and dates concerning the rest of the school year.

Report Cards
Students receive their report cards April 17. Should you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher at 856-3469. Report cards should be signed and returned to their homeroom teacher.

Extra-help
There are several avenues students can use to receive extra-help:
  • Teachers routinely offer extra-help during non-instructional times
  • Teachers offer extra-help during our Directed Learning Period. Students can ask for extra-help or be assigned by their teacher
  • We operate three full time extra-help classes during lunch. Mr. Campbell (English) in room 210, Mrs. Callahan (math) room 202 and Mr. Gerhardt (science) room 201
  • Students can ask for or be assigned to a grade 12 tutor during period 6
  • Students who are having trouble completing assigned work will be assigned to our noon hour Extension Room. Run by Mr. Wilson, students use this time to complete missing work. Student tutors are also available to help students with questions

Course Selection
Students in grades 9-11 have met with our guidance counselors to review course options for the next school year. We will be hosting a course information night on Monday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in our cafeteria. Parents will be presented with information about course options and can ask questions about their child’s courses for next year.

Bye Bye Birdie
Our Drama Department proudly presents the musical Bye Bye Birdie. The shows runs from April 22-25 and all shows start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for students and can be purchased at the main office or at the door.

2009 Gathering of the Clans

What Are We Doing?
Student at BMHS, supported by the parent –driven organization called “Friends of the Highlanders”, are organizing a ‘24 hours at school’ fundraiser- called GATHERING OF THE CLANS.  This event is for all students and parents/guardians of our community.
What is the Event?
On Friday May 22 at 4pm until Sat am May 23rd, students at BMHS will participate in a friendly competition ... games, sporting activities, dances... all onsite at the school.
This was a successful event in past years and we are bringing it back.
Why Are We Fund Raising?
All schools must do fundraising to help augment their budgets.
This is especially true these days with limitations to educational funding.
At BMHS, we have two immediate needs
1.  Upgrade computers and technology at the school
-         library computers for students are outdated
-         limited number of computers for student research available in classrooms
2. Enhance our Breakfast Program
- Students at our school receive their morning breakfast at BMHS
In addition, as part of our event, we will also be supporting the Regional Food Bank- a percentage of funds raised will be donated to the Food bank, and we will also be collecting and donating non-perishable food items.
How are we raising funds?
Individual fundraising/pledges
Group (Clan) Activities as well
-         Bake Sales, Barbeques, Grocery Bagging
-         Car Washes, Coat Checking
-         Bottle Drives + Coffee Houses
What Am I Asking?
Would you be able to support our Gathering of the Clans with a pledge?
Donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt
Cheques may be made out to ‘Minister of Finance’.
